Transfer Molding

Transfer Molding

A molding process used to produce parts of better dimensional quality and larger quantities than produced with the compression molding process. A transfer mold is comprised of the part cavity, and a transfer pot and piston. The pot is connected to the cavity via sprues which allow rubber to flow from the pot as the rubber is forced out by the piston into the cavity. Since the mold cavity is completely closed just before the material enters the cavity, there is less flashing and better control of the “closure” dimensions of the mold. It is also used commonly whenever rubber has to be molded onto a metal insert since the mold is closed prior to transferring the rubber into the cavity. This prevents the insert from moving or being displaced due to the forces of the rubber that are generated during mold closure. Cycle times are generally faster than with compression method.

Advantages of transfer molding:

  • Better dimensional control than with compression
  • Lower unit cost than with compression usually, due to shorter cycle times
  • Less part flashing
  • Since mold is completely closed before the rubber is transferred into the cavity inserted parts are more easily produced

Vertical rubber molding compression/transfer press capabilties:
from 15 tons to over 300 tons clamping force. Platen sizes range up to 30” x 30”.

We can process the following elastomers:

  • Acrylic
  • Aflas
  • BUNA or Nitrile including hydrogenated Nitrile, HSN, or HNBR
  • Butyl
  • EPDM
  • FKM
  • Fluorosilicone
  • Hypalon
  • Natural rubber/polyisoprene
  • Neoprene/chloroprene
  • SBR
  • Silicone
  • Urethane
  • Viton™
